Stone Statement Necklace -tutorial-

I love necklaces.

I think it's because a necklace can transform a plain outfit into a stylish one!  T-shirt and jeans become a fashion statement when you add a pretty necklace.

Today, I want to share an easy necklace you can make yourself! 

Here's what you need:

Hot glue gun // felt (Wal-Mart - 50 cents) // stones/pebbles (Dollar Tree - $1) // ribbon (Wal-Mart - $1.50) // beading wire (JoAnn's - $???)

1.  Cut felt into desired shape of the 'bib' portion of the necklace.  This will just be a rough cut.

2.  Play around with the placement of the stones.  Be sure to take a picture to remember where the stones fit best.

3.  Carefully hot glue the stones to the felt and each other.  I had to use the hottest setting and used quite a bit of glue!  It was nearly impossible to keep the glue from peering through the cracks.

-After all the glue dries, carefully trim the excess felt around the edges.

4.  Wrap the beading wire in between cracks of the rocks.  Use as little or as much wire as desired!

5.  Feed the ribbon through a loop of wire towards tip of the bib.  Cut to desired length.  I also put a dab of glue between the ribbon and felt AND tied a gentle knot in the ribbon.

6.  Secure the necklace in the back with a bow.

YOU'RE DONE!

This necklace would look great with beads, rhinestones, painted stones, buttons, etc.

This gal's ready for a fall weekend..

Trompin' around like she's, "All that and a bag of chips"...

(Did I just totally age myself with that phrase??  I should see how often I can say that in everyday conversation and keep a straight face....)

Do your mini-me's like getting their hair done??  My gal is usually loves it.  We either watch a show with a snack OR sit in mommy's bathroom and play with my make-up brushes or whatever won't break.

I just did a french twist down either side and met the twists in the middle with a clear hairband.  I twisted her tiny pony into a bun and secured it with a couple bobby pins.

I usually spray down her hair (with water) first so it's easier to handle, and then I use a light hold hairspray to set it.

DIY Cake Stand { or jewelry holder }

I absolutely love the idea of using something for something else... you got me??

Example:  The cute porcelain Anthro egg crates used for storing jewery, water pitchers used as vases, or stacked suitcases as nightstands.

Now that my examples explain my vague description...

 You've probably seen (on Pinterest) gorgeous cake stands used to store jewelry or perfume, but I can't seem to find any for myself at a good price!

Sidenote:  Rox found a beautiful one on clearance at Target (awhile back..) so you CAN find them... I just never have... 

So I made my own!!

Supplies:

2 thrifted decorative plates, a candlestick from Dollar Tree, and a thrifted ceramic cup/planter

E6000 Adhesive and Krylon spray paint in Coral Isle

The process is EASY:

- Glue the candlestick or cup to the bottom of the decorative plate.  Let dry for 24 hours.

- Spray paint the cake stand using as many coats as needed.  You may do well to use a primer first!

That's it!  And I didn't even have to spray paint the off-white stand since the cup and plate were the same color! SCORE.

I used these to display rings and bracelets at my craft fair last weekend, and I loved how it looked!

I don't recommend putting food directly on the stands (especially the painted one) unless it's lined with wax paper or something similar.

I also recommend that you NOT use the clear gloss protective paint after painting with your original color... I had to scrape and scrub and start ALL over on the coral cake stand after trying the protective coat.  It wrinkled up and started peeling away... I wanted to cry.  SO, save yourself the tears and DON'T DO IT.

I've made them using a candlestick and a stove burner cover before... while they served their purpose for a cheap price, they have since broken and are not very sturdy.

So go make yourself a cake stand to use for your jewelry or perfume for just a few dollars!  And let us know if you do!

I have been pretty much MIA recently...

My family just made a HUGE life change!  Although we are excited about this change, it has been B-U-S-Y 'round these parts.

So as I type this little post here, I am sitting in running pants, tank, and hat (pretending I am going to work-out soon... we all know that's a lie!).  

I look forward to celebrating tomorrow with worship, rest, and probably a shower! :)

Weekend Wear: Recap

We are on week 17 of our Weekend Wear series!

(Actually... I won't mention names, but SOMEONE obviously can't count very well in Roman Numerals and skipped number 11... so we are supposed to be on Week 16... Woops.  My bad.  I mean, SOMEONE'S bad...)

Since we are all in the middle of moving, life changes, recovering from the wedding of the century, etc... I decided to just do a recap of our outfit posts until now.. ENJOY!

One of my favorite things about Weekend Wear is that I've kept myself searching through my closet to come up with new outfits with clothes I already have!  It's been fun to mix and match things I usually wear with one particular oufit.

Color Love - Jade

Does anyone else find themselves subconsciously drawn to a certain color, begin filling your life with that certain color, and only realize your obsession after you're surrounded by your obsession??

I hope I'm not the only one...

This season of my life, I find myself drawn to the minty, greenish, bluish tone of JADE.

Wal-Mart currently carries Krylon spray paint in JADE!  AHH.  I have to keep myself from spray painting EVERYTHING in my house Jade.  It's starting to get embarrassing at how many things have just 'found' themselves in my favorite color.

Quick Ring Tutorial

Although I know people love wearing their 'special' jewelry, it's usually a timeless piece (which is GREAT!)... I love me some TRENDY.  Y'all.  I was ALL about the big plastic jewelry rings, bra strap necklaces, and toe rings.

It's always hard to justify buying those trendy pieces of jewelry, when you KNOW it's going to be out of style in the next few years.  (I love a good statement necklace, but you KNOW we are going to be making fun of them just a few years down the road!)

What am I getting at??

MAKE YOUR OWN JEWELRY.

(If you can...)

Here's an EASY, peasy wrappy, nesty, cutesy ring tutorial for you!

1.  Using a cute bead and 12 inches of 20 gauge beading wire (I used silver...), string the bead onto the middle of the wire.

2.  If you have a ring sizer, GREAT!  If not, use your finger to decide how big to make the ring.  Wrap each side of the wire around your finger until the wire is pointing into the air again.

3.  Make sure to leave a TEENSY bit of wiggle room, and take it off of your finger.

4.  CLOSE UP!

5.  Begin to wrap each side of the wire around the bead...

6.  ...for this bead I wrapped each end of the wire three times.

7.  With the excess wire, use jewelry pliers (or use your strong, nimble fingers!) to wrap around the double wires that go around your finger.

8.  With this particular bead and ring size, I was able to wrap it 2 or 3 times. Finish the other side of the excess wire and...

9.  DONE!

This ring LITERALLY takes 10 minutes or LESS!

Pallet Projects

Happy Monday ladies (and the few men who MAY stumble upon our blog by accident)!

I don't know about you, but I am obsessed with pallets right now because they are free, they are perfectly distressed, they're free, the options for building are endless, oh, and did I mention they are free?

Also, having a hubby that will take them apart for you is definitely icing on the cake.

(Seriously, just buy your man a sawzall-or a knockoff, like we did-and he'll happily chop up anything in his path.)

So, all of this pallet obsession has got me thinking about new projects as well as ones I've created in the past that I want to replicate.

Here are a few of my favorites:

1.  Pallet Sign - Attach boards together with 2 horizontal pieces across the back.  Hand letter your favorite quote, add a bunting banner, and a sawtooth hanger to the back for easy DIY art for your walls!

2.  Small Jewelry Holder - (The one pictured is not technically pallet wood but I plan to use it next time I make one for myself)  Knobs can be purchased from Hobby Lobby or Anthropologie.  Drill pilot holes, followed by countersink holes, and attach knobs.  Attach sawtooth hanger to back.  This is a cute way to display necklaces or bracelets!

3.  Large Jewelry Holder - Create sign like #1, then attach knobs like #2.  Attach 2 sawtooth hangers to back.  This is a larger piece that can hold large necklaces and used as a piece of art at the same time!

4.  Create sign like #1 and use as a backdrop for pictures!  (If you peruse our blog, you'll notice I've used this one many times!)

So, if you happen to see a pallet on the side of the road, don't pass it by!  

The possible pallet projects you can create are endless!

Color Block Necklace: Tutorial

There's something SO simple about dressing up an outfit with a fun statement necklace.

There's something SO annoying about spending $30 or more on that cute statement necklace.

Why not make your own?!

(Disclaimer:  I cannot take full credit for this necklace idea.  I found a tutorial a long time ago for it, and I cannot find it ANYWHERE now.  I would love to give credit where it's due so let me know if you know where to find the original tutorial!)

1.  Supplies:  Wooden square dowels (Wal-Mart), string (Wal-Mart?? I think mine is braiding cord found in the kid's craft section), spray paint, sandpaper, saw (I used a jig-saw, but you could easily use a hand saw), and a drill.

2.  Decide how long you want your dowels to be and mark the lengths for each piece.  My longest dowel is 4 inches long, the next length is 3 1/2 inches, the third length is 3 inches, the fourth is 2 5/8 inches, and the last is 2 5/8 inches.  (NO idea why I chose the length progression...)  Get creative here.  I'm pretty sure keeping them all the same length would look great!!  I wanted nine total pieces in my necklace.

3.  Next, saw each piece to the length you marked.  SAFETY peeps:  protective eyewear, closed toed shoes, gloves... Ok, now you can't blame me for not telling you! Whew.

4.  Smooth off the splintery pieces and sharp corners by rubbing the wood pieces on sandpaper.

5.  After sanding...

6.  Line up pieces in order.. you may want to sand some down a little more in case the matching piece ended up shorter.

7.  With the tops of the wooden pieces lined up, mark a dot where you will drill your hole.

8.  I used the second smallest drill bit size we had (not sure of a number or name for it...) to make the hole that will be used to string the pieces together.  Just make sure the necklace string you chose will fit in the hole.

9.  You will have to sand off some splinters after drilling.

10.   Once again, make sure everything lines up.

11.  Using dropcloth or cardboard, lay out your pieces.  Spray first with the gold spray paint (Gold by Krylon).  The metallic colors cover very well and dry fast so you may only need to do one coat.  Make sure you flip the pieces over once they are dry to cover the back of the pieces.

12.  Once the gold paint is dry, cover the top of each piece with painters tape.  Make sure each piece is covered with the same amount (length) so the second color is coated in a straight line.  I used Seafoam by Rustoleum.  Once the pieces are painted and dried, remove the painters tape and string the pieces in order.  I tied a knot on either end of the nine pieces so they wouldn't slide around when worn.

That's it!

You can create many necklaces that look different by changing the length of the wooden pieces and using different colors.  You can see me wearing a plain gold version HERE.

Weekend Wear { Volume VI }

 This is one of my go-to outfits when I want to dress up a little but still be really comfy.  The jersey dress is lightweight and breathable, so it is perfect when paired with a jacket for cooler weather or worn strapless for those hot summer months.  I purchased the dress from Forever 21 about 3 or 4 years ago, but I'm sure something similar can be found at Old Navy or Target.

The necklace is a recent purchase of mine from Dainty Deals (mine is Salmon colored).  I found this shop from a post by Merrick's Art, and they have just a few scarves and necklaces, but the prices are fantastic!  I'm all about a good deal.  If you haven't checked it out, you are missing out.

You may also may recognize the shoes from some of Jess' posts.  And the reason you do is because they are the exact same ones, ha!  I unashamedly copied and love that they add some pattern to any simple outfit.

Our Weekend Wear posts are meant to show you some outfits that we actually wear as well as give you some ideas of some budget friendly items that can be paired together.  We buy most of our clothes from the thrift store, Target, Old Navy, Marshalls and similar stores, and want to share how inexpensive items can be paired together.  I hope we are accomplishing our goal!

Weekend Wear { Volume 5 }

Shirt - Handmade; Jeans - Wal-Mart; Floral Wedges - thrifted; Necklace - handmade (tutorial); Watch and bracelets - gift

It's raining.  And cold.  So the chances of me keeping this on all day is slim to none.  I'm pretty sure I'll be changing into pajama pants, sweatshirt, and socks VERY soon.

I'm not too sure about the pink lips and coral necklace together... if nude looked good on my lips, I'm pretty sure that's what I would have put on.  Instead I'm wearing nude on my toes! (Revlon ColorStay in Bare Bones.)

I have this thing about wearing something patterned if everything else is plain.  My floral wedges are my favorite spring shoe choice if I want a heel.  Otherwise I choose my leopard/cheetah (not sure which one!) print flats to add a pattern to a plain outfit.

I love, love to layer bracelets.  It's pretty hard to go wrong when layering bracelets... it always adds a little interest to an otherwise boring outfit!

I found the inspiration for making my shirt from Cotton & Curls.  She has a few very, very easy shirt tutorials that you should check out!  I ended combining a couple different methods and ideas she had to come up with my own version.

NOW.

Rox inspired me to share the joys of taking your own pictures... it's definitely the most awkward, ridiculous process... so here are what the bulk of my photos end up looking like:

1.  Umm, what is this??  In my defense, it was raining... I got caught up in the moment...

2.  Why in the world did this even happen??  Is that even a real pose??  Wow.

3.  I guess I was caught up in the moment here, too???  Must've been singing, "I whip my hair back and forth..."
