Fall Trend: Ankle Boots

I know I am a little late jumping on the ankle boot/booties band wagon (I blame it on quickly approaching the age of 30 and having a slight resistance to change), but, nevertheless, I'm finally loving this trend!

And every time I look in my closet for something to wear, I find myself thinking how much cuter an outfit would be if it was paired with ankle boots.  (Am I the only weird one out there who does this type of thing?  Surely not.  SURELY.)

And as much as I LOVE Pinterest, inevitably, when I search "ankle boots" or "booties", I find the perfect pair only to click on it and find out they cost $600.

Ok, I know that is a little bit of an exaggeration, but $200 and $600 may as well be the same thing - they both fall in the "out of my budget" category.

SO, I thought I would compile a list of a few of my favorites from stores I would actually shop at (Target, Shoe Carnival, Modcloth, etc.).  There are still a couple from these stores that are a little pricey, but much more within reach, especially if you pair them with an online coupon!

What are your thoughts on ankle boots?  Have you found any other stores that are fairly inexpensive?

Floral Scarf Love

Can you tell someone is ready for fall weather?

I have to admit, I wore one this week because I couldn't stand it any longer.

Even though it was in the low nineties.  And I was sweating.

Fashion before comfort, right?  Ha!

Basically, I looked ridiculous and probably won't pull that scarf out again until it drops another 10 or 15 degrees.

BUT, I can dream right?

My go-to scarf that I wore last fall through spring was one I got for $5 from TJ Maxx.

It's blue floral and I love pairing it up with my neural outfits to give it a pop of color.  (I'm wearing it in this Weekend Wear post.)

I kind of think that colorful scarves are to Winter like colorful statement necklaces are to Summer.

Although I still wear statement necklaces in the Winter (and apparently scarves in the summer....i.e. my big mistake earlier in the week).

But you get my point. 

Anyways, since I wear my current one so often, I'd love to invest in another to switch it up a bit.

My favorites above are the top row, third one down, from Anthropologie, and the second row, second one down, from the Buckle.

But who knows.....we have a high of 96º today.

Let's just say, I'm dreaming of cooler weather.

And floral scarves.

Boys Room - Big Plans

If you've been following this blog for any length of time, you probably saw the tour of my boys' room here.

The boys have been in their toddler beds for a couple years now, and while I still love them, I knew it was time to start looking for new beds.  My oldest just turned five and is above average  in height (He definitely gets that from his daddy who's 6'3, and not me being just shy of 5'4"), so his legs are close to hanging off the crib-sized mattress.

While we were looking, a generous friend offered us the bed above for our boys.  We humbly accepted, and I quickly got to work planning their new room!

While I will not be purchasing the exact items above, I will try to use it as a general guideline as far as what to look for at Thrift Stores, Garage Sales, or to DIY. 

(And I realize the picture above looks like the room may be a little 'adult' for the boys.  But, rest assured, I have plans to adding some kiddie elements to the mix.)

Color Love - Jade

Does anyone else find themselves subconsciously drawn to a certain color, begin filling your life with that certain color, and only realize your obsession after you're surrounded by your obsession??

I hope I'm not the only one...

This season of my life, I find myself drawn to the minty, greenish, bluish tone of JADE.

My Polyvore Mood Board

Wal-Mart currently carries Krylon spray paint in JADE!  AHH.  I have to keep myself from spray painting EVERYTHING in my house Jade.  It's starting to get embarrassing at how many things have just 'found' themselves in my favorite color.

Weekend Wear { Vol. XI }

For our 11th Weekend Wear Post, I thought I'd do something a little different.

If you've read this blog for any length of time, you know that one of my favorite stores to shop at is Target.  SO......I thought I would put together 3 summer 'weekend wear' outfits you can find in stores NOW!  (And if you click on small items on the bottom, it will take you to Target.com where you can actually purchase them)

I must admit, I'm tempted to go out and purchase the rest of these items now (although the Dave Ramsey voice in my head is screaming.....NO, resist the temptation!)

In My Makeup Bag....

Hi guys, Rox here.  

Jess's original 'In My Makeup Bag' post was so well viewed, that we thought we should have a Round 2 (not to compete with the amazing Round 1)!

BUT, before I do, I wanted to second the Maybelline BB Cream and Tresseme Dry Shampoo.  I currently have the BB cream and use it daily and have used the dry shampoo in the past.  So, if you overlooked those two (and the other items in Jess's makeup bag that I had to pick up after the post), you can check it out here.

1.  Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion - Eyeshadow Base - This stuff is amazing!  You put on a TINY amount - meaning a year and a half ago I bought 2 tubes and still have about half of one left - and it prevents creasing and helps your eyeshadow stay in place.  I especially like using this in the summer when my makeup seems to melt off my face.  It's not cheap, but lasts FOREVER.  (The link above is for the exact kind I have which has been discontinued, so it's a little cheaper.  The new one is in a squeeze tube and can be found here.)  

2.  Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in brown/black - I think someone mentioned another eyeliner in a comment last time that they really like (and I'll have to try it), but the one I love right now is this one!  It stays in place ALL DAY and doesn't smudge.  This is the closest thing to a waterproof eyeliner pencil that still goes on pretty smoothly.

3.  Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Neutralizer Concealer - While I am getting older, I mainly use this concealer because of the applicator not for the age rewinding capabilities as much.  One complaint I have of concealers is that they are thick and hard to blend in with the rest of your makeup without it being obvious you are trying to 'hide' something.  This concealer goes on thinly but still covers everything you need to.  It is recommended for under eye area, but I use it on all my 'trouble spots' and it works great.

4.  L'OREAL The One Sweep Sculpting Blush Duo in Posh/Chic - I don't use the brush that comes with the Blush because I felt like it created too drastic of a line down my cheek.  Instead, I use a fluffy blush brush.  You have to make sure the angle is correct (from right under your cheekbone to right in front of your ear), but the colors complement well leaving you with a 'sculpting' effect for half the cost.

5.  CoverGirl LashBlast Volume Mascara in Waterproof Very Black - I LOVE this stuff.  I have tried many other kinds and nothing compares.  Again, I like waterproof makeup especially on the eyes so you don't have to worry about your makeup running down your face when it rains, when your eyes water, or heaven forbid, you cry in public (y'all all know the crier that I am....ha!).  This is my #1 favorite makeup on this list.

Thrift Store Canvas Frame to Chalkboard

I go to our local thrift store every once in a while to look around, usually with nothing specific in mind to buy.   This is a good way to shop because you can end up getting a better deal this way.  The times I go shopping  with something specific in mind, I end up paying a higher price because I want to purchase that item that day and will basically pay what I have to (within reason).  When I don't have anything specific in mind, I will return home, a lot of the time, with nothing in hand unless I find some amazing deal I can't live without.  

I digress.

SO, on one of these trips, I was looking around in the home section - I usually go there first - and saw these chunky wooden frames with a painted canvas inside.  I forgot to get a picture of the original artwork, but I think they were some sort of nature scene.  Anyway, I had this BRILLIANT idea that somehow I would magically transform into an artist and be able to paint something so spectacular on them that I would want to hang them in our home.  And what basically happened was this:

Please.  Please.  Control your laughter.

I then had two epiphanies.  The first was that I am not and will not ever be a painter.  End of story.  Second, chalkboard paint covers an array of messes.  And that's exactly what I needed.

Plus, it does not require much skill besides a steady hand.  And you only need that if you are in too much of a hurry to tape anything off like someone I know. {Cough}

I have used the spray chalkboard paint in the past and it works fine but ends up being more expensive because of the number of coats.  I bought this and used it for the first time on this project and LOVED it!  

This is my beginning to paint picture.  Notice, I am painting (or acting like it) with my left hand because I cannot operate a camera with my right hand.  There are so many things about this that are just WRONG.  It made me laugh when I looked back at it today, so I thought I'd share the humor.  Ha!

This is after just one coat of the chalkboard paint.  I believe I ended up painting 3 coats to make sure my failed painting was good and covered.

And here is the end result!  I have a perfect spot in mind in our master bedroom.  They'll go above our dresser that I should begin refinishing soon (and of course, with corresponding blog posts).

Oh, and just to leave you with a little laugh - this is what happens when you try to take pictures for your blog with your children around.  He just couldn't miss out on a post!
